Early this year a multi agency team comprising Kenya dairy board,DCI and KRA asked this consignment believed to be contraband milk powder. The team intercepted a total of 1,597 bags of the goods after a crack down around Kamakis and Ruai areas in Nairobi.
The impounded goods have a market value of 40 million shillings as the goods made their way into their market,KRA says it could have lost over 15 million shillings in unpaid taxes.
6 people were arrested last week that have already been arraigned and charged with various offences which include being in possession of uncustomed goods, importing dairy produce without a valid permit and failing to pay import levy to the Kenya dairy board.
According to the government the fight against illegal milk imports is aimed at protecting the local dairy industry. However, some traders in the market have failed the exercise that is aimed at punishing some players in the market.
