In a significant move that reshapes Kenya’s political landscape, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua officially launched his new political party, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), during a ceremony held in Lavington, Nairobi, on Thursday.

The event marks Gachagua’s strategic entry into the 2027 presidential race, signaling a departure from his previous affiliation with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).A New Political Identity—The DCP introduces a fresh visual identity with its neon green, brown, and white colors.

The party’s slogan, “Skiza Wakenya” (Listen to Kenyans), is embodied in its logo, which features an ear with fingers cupped around it, symbolizing attentiveness to the voices of Kenyan citizens.Gachagua, who will serve as the party leader, emphasized the DCP’s commitment to inclusivity and responsive governance.

“Our mission is to create a platform where every Kenyan feels heard and represented,” he stated during the launch.

The party’s interim leadership comprises notable political figures.

Gachagua’s formation of the DCP follows his impeachment from the Deputy President position in October 2024, a historic event under Kenya’s 2010 Constitution. The impeachment, based on allegations including corruption and undermining government authority, was seen by Gachagua as politically motivated.

He has since positioned himself as a reformist, seeking to address what he perceives as the shortcomings of the current administration.In his address, Gachagua criticized the UDA, stating, “Our people are done with UDA. We joined the party believing in its vision, but Ruto has taken full control—both as the driver and the sole holder of the logbook.”

A notable aspect of the DCP’s strategy is its focus on youth engagement. Gachagua announced plans to appoint a Gen Z individual as the party’s deputy leader, highlighting the importance of involving young people in leadership roles.”My party will involve them (Gen Z) to a very large extent at the position of deputy party leader. I’m the party leader; my deputy will be a Gen Z so that we involve them,” he said.

With the launch of the DCP, Gachagua sets the stage for a competitive 2027 presidential election. The party aims to field candidates across all positions, presenting itself as a viable alternative to the current ruling coalition.
