Kenya is embarking on a transformative journey with the planned expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The Ministry of Transport has laid out ambitious plans to modernize the country’s busiest airport, ensuring it can meet the demands of a growing economy and strengthen Kenya’s role as a regional aviation hub.
The ministry has reassured the public that all procurement procedures are being conducted in strict accordance with the law. This commitment is meant to guarantee fairness, transparency, and accountability. Officials have dismissed rumors of a pre-selected contractor, emphasizing that the process is still ongoing and updates will be shared once concluded.
Why JKIA Needs Expansion
JKIA’s infrastructure is outdated and currently struggling to meet the rising demand for both passenger and cargo services. With Kenya’s economy increasingly tied to global trade, tourism, and regional connectivity, upgrading the airport is not just necessary,it’s urgent. The expansion will include:Rehabilitation of existing terminals and runways,Expansion of passenger facilities and Construction of a new terminal
These improvements are designed to enhance efficiency, improve passenger experience, and increase cargo handling capacity. The project is expected to take up to 36 months to complete once construction begins. Importantly, the government has maintained that the contract value will remain below KSh 154.2 billion, countering reports circulating online.
Beyond infrastructure, this expansion is about positioning Kenya as a premier aviation hub in Africa. A modernized JKIA will attract more international airlines, boost tourism, and strengthen trade links, all vital for Kenya’s long-term growth.
