The health sector is one of the critical segments in the Kenyan govenment since it deals with the health and well being of citizens in the country. Therefore, the government in partnership with the ministry of health work hand in hand to ensure citizens health have been looked into by various health practitioners across the country. And since it’s a wide sector,it is not only supported by the government but also faith based organisations and stake holders in the private hospitals.
On the history background of the health framework ,the government in 1994 approved the health policy framework as a way of developing and managing health services. The policy aimed at responding to issues such as outdated health laws increased burden of disease, worsening poverty levels and rapid population growth.
According to a health expert in Kenya, Kenyatta and Moi referral hospital are the well equipped hospitals because of the existence of specialized department for handling and dealing with patients who have critical conditions. They also have medical devices like CT scanners.
However ill equipped or poorly equipped hospitals in Kenya are majorly the small dispensaries and this is because they lack basic medical devices like x-ray machines.
On the treatment of cancer,so far there’s no medic devices installed in Kenyan health institutions to handle and treat cancer patients. However, measures have been put into place and this include allocation of funds for installation of these equipment in the public hospitals.
Despite the challenges in the health sector, counties such as Nairobi, Kisumu, Machakos Makueni and Mombasa have made great strides in equipping it’s health facilities.
On the categorization of hospitals, many hospitals in Kenya have been grouped into many levels and this is in accordance with the services they offer to clients.
These hospitals include the:level one hospitals, level two hospitals, level three hospitals and level four hospitals.
Level one hospitals are mainly small hospitals and this include the dispensaries that offer small services like immunization, family planning and antenatal care.
Level two hospitals which are mostly subcounty hospitals offer a wider range of services. These include;basic surgeries at affordable costs and maternity health care services as well as the emergency services.
Level three hospitals are the county
referral hospitals which are atleast found in each and every county. They serve a variety of clients across the county and they are often preferred because they offer specialized services which are not available at the level one and two hospitals .
To improve the health sector, the government in partnership with the ministry of health can;communicate the goals and progress in the health sector, create a balanced and executable plan, create a balanced team, and re search and collaborate with other organizations.
In funding and supporting health activities, several organisations have proven to be supportive and this include;United Nations international and children’s fund (UNICEF) which supports the child health and nutrition and also educates on the HIV prevention .
The world health organisation which promotes health, keeps the world safe and serves the vulnerable.
The United Nations population fund (UNFPA)plays a very big role in ending maternal death, and other harmful practices like illegal abortion and ensuring birth safety.
The global fund to fight AIDS tuberculosis and malaria plays it’s role by boosting efforts in ending the AIDS tuberculosis and malaria epidemics.
To cap it all ,the health sector has improved drastically since the year 2010,however more efforts are needed to make it better in order to reach the universal health requirement of the year 2023.
