On thursday last week Mombasa county health department issued an alert on the outbreak of the red eye disease saying that 150 cases had been reported at various health facilities in the country.
The red eye disease spreads through touching the eyes of an infected person or contaminated surfaces then touching your eyes. Though it spreads very fast rarely does it cause long term complications to the eyes.
To avoid infections, the public is urged to:
-Wash hands frequently
-Keep hands off the face
-Never share towels with those affected
-Disinfect high touch surfaces especially in cases of an infection
If affected, one is advised to:
-Take time off work or school to avoid spreading it to others
-For mild symptoms, apply a cold compress over the eyes with a wet face towel and avoid self medication.
Persons with severe symptoms such as:
-Redness
-Discharge
-Swelling
-Bleeding should seek medication attention urgently.
With this, the government continues to caution the public to practise high levels of hygiene. The government spokesperson Dr Isaac Mwaura says the government has taken precautions by conducting immunization, isolation of infected persons and distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets urging the public to seek medical services in case of an infection.
