After boycotting for a few hours the African Games trials to be hosted in Ghana by Kenya athletes at Nyayo stadium on Tuesday, athletes were coerced by top officers from the National Police Service, Kenya Defence Forces, and Kenya Prison to compete in the trials.
They agreed since most of the athletes are from the discipline forces. The one athlete per event was directed to Athlete Kenya to choose only 30 athletes overall due to financial constraints that the organization is facing, though the government bowed to the pressure and agreed to the athletes’ plead to increase the number of slots in events for the continental showpiece bringing an end to the standoff at Nyayo Stadium.
According to the athletes, in the Kenyan sports arena, athletics provide a lot of medals for the nation and they will not agree at any point to deny their chance of participation. After the resumption of the semi-final trials, Mary Moraa who is a Commonwealth 800 m champion clinched the win and she has hinted about participating in the 4*400 m relay if it will be available.
During the previous edition of the event in 2019, Kenya managed to send 61 athletes who represented the country well and jetted back with 20 medals (10 gold, 7 silver, and 3 bronze)
