Alfred Keter, the former member of parliament for Nandi Hills, was freed a few hours after being taken into custody following a dramatic event in Kileleshwa, Nairobi.
In order to successfully request his release, Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo led a group of attorneys to the Kamukunji Police station.
Keter declared he would not be intimidated by the government agents who were responsible for his arrest.
According to police, Keter is being investigated for alleged fraud and arms trafficking, both of which he disputes.Keter and his spouse described their dramatic Sunday morning arrest.
The spouse said that their kids were traumatized by the event.
At the police cells in Kamukunji, he was seized and booked. The police promised to call him back for more questioning. The actors involved in the performance claimed that he had resisted arrest, so they staged the dramatic arrest.
The Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, among other officials, were seen flanking the former lawmaker as she spoke to the media on Sunday outside the police station, according to a photo obtained by the Star.
As Keter left a church function in Nairobi’s Kileleshwa neighborhood, he was taken into custody. When the incident occurred, his family was around him and could be heard yelling for assistance.
A bystander noticed the disturbance and captured it on camera. The former congressman was seen being pulled from his Toyota V8 Land Cruiser by armed men dressed in plain clothes in a video, and they then left in a Ford Ranger Double-cabin.
Later, Keter’s manager posted on his official Facebook page, saying, “I was abducted and taken to a place I don’t know.”
Korir Singoei, principal secretary for foreign affairs, denounced the event.
“There’s a process involved in making an arrest. Not one of them is this. Even when pursuing lawful goals, we must avoid the urge to use illegal tactics,” he wrote on X.
Ahmedinasir Abdulahi, a lawyer, declared that the street arrest was intolerable. “It’s really unacceptable. “This isn’t a legal procedure that permits law enforcement to apprehend a suspect,” he declared.
Martha Karua, the leader of Narc-Kenya, denounced the act as well. “Every day it’s growing worse. If Keter is being arrested, then why is he being taken where? #GetAlfredKeter out there.
“Today, the nation witnessed the abduction of former Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter in Nairobi, another incident in a series of proliferating gangland-type kidnappings,” stated Gideon Moi, the chairman of Kanu. This worrying pattern, which includes the kidnapping of multiple youth that we have categorically and repeatedly denounced, portends a bleak future for the rule of law, which Kenya takes great pleasure in.
“Since young people began to mount a fierce resistance against oppressive economic policies, some of them have gone missing and are being held incommunicado while their families are worried about the whereabouts of their loved ones.”
The laws and the constitution of our country are quite explicit about the right to arrest anyone who is accused of committing a crime. These people have to be given access to legal counsel, told why they were detained, and brought before a court of competent jurisdictions in a timely manner so they can be tried.
“Therefore, we implore the authorities to protect the rule of law, guarantee the security of all of its citizens, and free anyone detained without authorization anywhere in the nation.”
