Despite Bayern dominating possession for most of the match, they failed to capitalize on their chances.
In the 79th minute, Duran latched onto a high ball, noticing Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer off his line. With incredible composure, the 20-year-old Colombian striker scooped the ball over Neuer, sending Villa fans into raptures.
This goal marked Duran’s fifth of the season from the bench, following four in the Premier League. Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who played a crucial role in keeping Bayern at bay, called Duran’s goal “one of the most beautiful in history” and praised the striker’s impact. Martinez’s own contributions were pivotal, with his saves ensuring Villa held onto their slender lead.
In the first half, Martinez saved a powerful header from Bayern striker Harry Kane, although it was later ruled offside. He also tipped over a dangerous shot from Michael Olise.
As Bayern pushed for an equalizer in the dying minutes, Martinez pulled off another stunning save to stop a Kane header, drawing a roar almost as loud as the one for Duran’s goal.
Reflecting on the emotional night, Martinez said, “It’s unreal. This is a night we will remember for a long time.” He expressed his love for the club and the fans, calling the victory “a statement” of Villa’s progress as a team.
Bayern manager Vincent Kompany acknowledged his side’s missed chances, saying, “We missed some big opportunities and they scored theirs. We’ve got to learn from this.” He also praised Villa’s strength, noting that playing at Villa Park was no easy task.
Before Duran’s heroics, Villa thought they had taken the lead when Pau Torres stabbed the ball into the net during a goalmouth scramble, but the effort was ruled out for offside. In the end, it was Duran who took the spotlight.
Fellow striker Morgan Rogers praised Duran’s energy and fearlessness, stating, “He’s such a handful for defenders. He backs himself 100% and delivers when it counts.” Rogers also remarked on Duran’s calm demeanor off the pitch, contrasting his fiery determination on it, calling him “a different animal when he’s playing.”
