

The Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy (MICDE) was under the spotlight as CS Hon. William Kabogo Gitau presented the Supplementary II Budget proposals before the National Assembly Committee on Communication, Information, and Innovation. The briefing shed light on the Ministry’s progress in various programs, highlighting both achievements and challenges.
Despite facing fund cuts, the Ministry has managed to establish and connect 18 digital hubs out of the targeted 390, and install 1,500Km of fiber against a goal of 5,000Km. On a positive note, the BPO sector saw the creation of 19,650 new jobs, surpassing the initial target of 10,000, while 49,513 youths were trained in digital skills through the Ajira Digital program.
Exciting news came with the update on the construction of the Konza Complex, which is on track, with the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KENYA-AIST) set for handover in March. This progress showcases the Ministry’s commitment to advancing digital infrastructure in the country.

Accompanying the CS, Broadcasting and Telecommunications PS Prof. Edward Kisiangโani emphasized the crucial need for optimal funding of MICDE, highlighting its role as a key enabler of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) Pillars. The Ministry plays a central role in driving the administration’s six BETA Pillars, making it a vital engine for progress and development.The Committee, led by Chair Hon. John Kiarie Waweru, expressed their support for the Ministry’s efforts to enhance connectivity nationwide.
Recognizing the essential role of communication in relaying government programs to the public, the Committee pledged their full support to ensure the successful implementation of ongoing projects.
