In a shocking turn of events, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya found himself under attack by a group of goons after paying a visit to the rural home of the late IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati in Sabata, Kiminini Constituency. Witnesses recounted the harrowing incident to The Kenya Times, detailing how the goons hurled stones at Natambeya’s convoy as he was leaving Chebukati’s residence.
The brave actions of one of the governor’s drivers, Kaitano Siphas, cannot go unnoticed. Siphas sustained serious neck injuries while shielding the governor from a direct hit during the attack. Furthermore, two of the governor’s bodyguards were also injured and are currently receiving medical treatment. The governor’s vehicle was not spared either, sustaining damage during the violent encounter.
This was not an isolated incident for Natambeya, as reports suggest that the goons responsible for the attack were allegedly hired by senior politicians from Trans Nzoia County and neighboring Bungoma County. The political landscape in the western region seems to be heating up, with incidents of violence becoming more frequent as politicians engage in power struggles.
In response to the escalating tensions, Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Gideon Oyagi issued strict guidelines for mourners attending the funeral of the former IEBC chair, scheduled for Saturday, March 8, 2025. Oyagi emphasized the importance of refraining from wearing political regalia and avoiding any cheering or jeering during the solemn event. The Commissioner made it clear that the funeral was not a political gathering but a burial, urging leaders to communicate this message to their supporters.

The recent attack on Natambeya comes on the heels of a similar confrontation that took place at the late Malava Member of Parliament, Malulu Injendi’s home. During a speech at the MP’s residence, the governor faced a rowdy group of youths chanting pro-President William Ruto slogans and accusing him of opposing the government. The situation quickly escalated, prompting Natambeya’s security team to evacuate him to safety as the hostility grew.

As politicians vie for power and influence, the safety and security of public officials must be a top priority to prevent further bloodshed and chaos. Let’s hope that peace and stability can be restored in Trans Nzoia County before more lives are put at risk.
