The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has clarified its stance on the possibility of party chairperson Gladys Wanga becoming President William Ruto’s running mate in the 2027 general election.
According to ODM Deputy Party Leader Abdulswamad Nassir, Wanga, like any other ODM leader, could be considered for the role, but only if she expresses interest and gains approval from the party’s internal organs.
Speaking during an interview on NTV, Nassir emphasized that the decision would be guided by strategic considerations, regional balance, and data-driven analysis. “If she said yes, then that has to go to the Central Management Committee for deliberation,” he explained, adding that the party would weigh all options before settling on a candidate.Despite growing speculation, Nassir noted that Wanga has not declared any interest in the position.

He also ruled himself out of contention, stating his commitment to serving as Mombasa Governor.Nassir further clarified that ODM is not in a formal coalition with Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), but is part of a broader government framework. He stressed that future cooperation would hinge on the success of the 10-point Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier this year.

The remarks come ahead of a crucial ODM Central Committee meeting, chaired by acting party leader Oburu Odinga. The meeting will address preparations for upcoming by-elections, commemorate ODM’s 20th anniversary and the legacy of its late leader Raila Odinga, and review the party’s strategic alignment with the ruling administration.
