Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat has declared a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Trans Mara South and Trans Mara West following a surge in deadly tribal clashes that have left several people dead and displaced thousands.
Speaking on Saturday, DIG Lagat announced that the curfew will take effect daily from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM, citing the deteriorating security situation in the two sub-counties, now officially designated as “disturbed areas.” A special security operation is currently underway to restore order.“We are taking firm measures to stabilize the region. The curfew is necessary to prevent further violence and protect lives,” Lagat stated. The affected areas include Nkararu in Trans Mara West, and in Trans Mara South: Oldonyo-Orok, Siteti, Ololoma, Corner, Ratiki, Isokon, Kerinkani, Kondamet, Olkiloriti, Angata Barakoi, Kapkeres, Lolgorian town, Mashangwa, and Sachangwan. The Kenya Red Cross has reported that over 1,800 people have been displaced in just three days due to the ongoing clashes, particularly in Angata Barakoi. The violence, involving members of the Maasai and Kipsigis communities, has resulted in multiple fatalities and widespread destruction of property, including the burning of homes.
In a stern warning, DIG Lagat gave individuals in possession of illegal firearms a 72-hour ultimatum to surrender the weapons or face decisive action. He also cautioned political leaders and individuals against inciting or financing the violence, urging both communities to embrace peace and coexistence.“We will not tolerate any form of incitement. Those found culpable will face the full force of the law,” Lagat warned on Friday.
