General Muhoozi, who is the son of President Yoweri Museveni, announced the decision on June 28 via his official social media account, stating that the media outlets should cease their operations immediately.

The announcement came hours after Muhoozi stated that NTV Uganda and Daily Monitor would not continue their operations without obtaining approval from President Museveni.According to reports published by the Daily Monitor, armed security officers arrived at the Nation Media Group offices shortly after midnight, locked them down and prevented employees from entering or leaving.

The operation caused NTV Uganda and Spark TV broadcasts to come to a halt, with viewers finding their screens blank with a message saying, “Video unavailable.”

NTV Uganda later confirmed the suspension of its broadcasts, stating that its services were cut off at 5:00 a.m. Ugandan time. The station also published photos showing soldiers outside its offices, confirming that its operations had been suspended.

In addition, some employees were reportedly detained inside the company’s premises as security continued to be tightened, a situation that also disrupted the publication of the Daily Monitor newspaper, which is among the largest independent newspapers in Uganda.Nation Media Group, headquartered in Kenya and recognized as the largest independent media company in East Africa, owns various media outlets in Uganda, including NTV Uganda, Spark TV, Daily Monitor, The EastAfrican, 93.3 KFM, 90.4 Dembe FM, Ennyanda and Nation Courier.

The move has been strongly criticized by opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, who has claimed that General Muhoozi is implementing the measures with the support of President Museveni with the aim of silencing media voices critical of the government.

The suspension of Nation Media Group’s operations follows several recent statements by General Muhoozi via social media, where he announced that the media outlet would no longer be allowed to report on activities related to President Yoweri Museveni for an unspecified period of time. Some countries around the world have been criticized by international organizations for allegedly undermining or restricting press freedom through harsh laws, intimidation, arrests of journalists, closures of media outlets, or censorship of information. Among the countries frequently cited are:China,Russia,Belarus,Eritrea,North Korea,Iran,Myanmar,Afghanistan (under Taliban rule),Syria,Nicaragua,Venezuela,Turkey,Egypt,Ethiopia (in various periods of conflict) and Uganda (has been repeatedly criticized for media shutdowns and repression of journalists)

Armed soldiers are on guard outside the headquarters of Daily Monitor newspaper in Namuwongo, Kampala./NTV Uganda

Organizations such as Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and Amnesty International have been issuing reports showing that in these countries, journalists face threats, arrest, imprisonment, or are prevented from reporting news that is critical of the government. However, the level of media freedom varies between countries, and the situation may change due to changes in the political, legal or security environment.

As for Kenya’s William Ruto and the Standard Media Group, there have been instances where President Ruto has publicly criticized the outlet for its reporting.
