Kenya\u2019s political parties occupy a powerful position in the country\u2019s democratic architecture. Every election cycle, they become the primary channels through which citizens choose leaders, debate public policy, and shape the direction of government.<\/kbd><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2022 General Election once again demonstrated that political parties are not merely electoral machines; they are institutions capable of strengthening democracy or weakening it.The Constitution of Kenya (2010), particularly Article 91, sets clear expectations for political parties. They are required to uphold democratic principles, promote national unity, respect human rights, and practice accountable governance. These constitutional ideals place political parties at the centre of Kenya\u2019s democratic project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the 2022 General Election, political parties dominated public life. From voter registration drives to campaign rallies, manifesto launches, and coalition negotiations, parties influenced nearly every aspect of the electoral process. The Kenya Kwanza Alliance and the Azimio la Umoja,One Kenya Coalition emerged as the two major political formations competing for power.Political analysts argue that the election represented both progress and continuity. On one hand, parties mobilized millions of citizens and participated in a largely peaceful electoral process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, persistent problems such as ethnic voting patterns, disputed party nominations, money politics, and post-election defections continued to raise concerns about democratic consolidation. \u201cPolitical parties are the engines of democracy, but engines without accountability can drive a nation in the wrong direction.\u201d \u2013 David Nyongesa.One of the clearest contributions of political parties was voter mobilization. Parties conducted extensive campaigns across counties, encouraging citizens to register and vote. Public rallies, media appearances, social media outreach, and community meetings significantly increased political awareness.The competitive nature of the election generated high public interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voters were presented with different policy proposals on the economy, agriculture, health care, education, and youth employment. This competition of ideas is a core feature of democratic politics because it allows citizens to make informed choices.According to election observers, turnout remained relatively strong despite logistical and political challenges. The ability of political parties to maintain public engagement was therefore an important democratic achievement.Political parties also played a significant role in representing diverse interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenya is a socially and regionally diverse country, and parties often serve as platforms through which communities seek representation in government.The formation of broad coalitions brought together parties from different regions, ethnic communities, and political traditions. Supporters of these alliances argued that coalition politics promoted inclusion and reduced the dominance of single-party politics.Women, youth, and persons with disabilities were also represented through party nomination processes and special interest seats. Although representation remains uneven, political parties continue to provide institutional pathways for groups that might otherwise be excluded from formal politics.The 2022 election further demonstrated the importance of political parties in facilitating peaceful competition for power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the presidential results were announced, the losing coalition challenged the outcome through the Supreme Court rather than through extra-constitutional means. \u201cThe 2022 election showed that Kenya can resolve political disputes through institutions rather than violence.\u201d Alex Wakasa.The Supreme Court heard petitions from political actors, reviewed evidence, and delivered a final judgment. The decision was accepted by state institutions, allowing a constitutional transfer of power to proceed.Many observers viewed this legal process as evidence of democratic maturity compared with earlier periods of electoral violence, particularly the 2007\u20132008 post-election crisis. Political parties, despite sharp disagreements, largely operated within constitutional frameworks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parties were also responsible for recruiting and nominating leaders for the presidency, Parliament, county assemblies, and county governments. Through these nomination processes, they provided voters with candidates for virtually every elective office in the country. \u201cKenya\u2019s democratic future depends on political parties that unite citizens rather than divide them.\u201dHowever, the same nomination exercises exposed serious democratic weaknesses. In several counties, aspirants complained of irregularities, missing names, altered results, favoritism, violence, and inadequate dispute resolution mechanisms.The nomination disputes became one of the most controversial aspects of the election. Candidates from major parties, including the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), publicly protested against the conduct of party primaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many disgruntled aspirants eventually contested as independent candidates after losing party nominations. The high number of independent candidates was widely interpreted as evidence that internal party democracy remains weak.Critics argue that when party members do not trust nomination processes, political parties lose legitimacy. Internal democracy is the foundation of external democracy; parties that cannot conduct fair internal elections may struggle to promote democratic values nationally.Ethnic politics remained another major challenge. Despite constitutional requirements encouraging national character, political competition continued to follow strong regional and ethnic patterns.Voting patterns in many counties reflected historical ethnic alignments more than ideological differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Campaign rhetoric frequently emphasized regional identity, community loyalty, and historical grievances.This trend undermines issue-based politics because citizens may vote primarily on ethnic affiliation rather than policy performance. Scholars warn that ethnic polarization can weaken national cohesion and reduce accountability.Money politics also featured prominently in the 2022 election. Campaigns required substantial financial resources for transportation, advertising, mobilization, security, and political organization.High nomination fees imposed by some parties created additional barriers for aspirants. Young candidates, women, and individuals without significant financial backing often struggled to compete effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
