Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a directive to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, emphasizing the importance of ensuring adequate security measures for journalists as Kenya approaches the 2027 General Elections. Recognizing the critical role that the media plays in providing transparent coverage during the electoral period, Murkomen\u2019s instruction stresses the need for the police force to protect reporters as they carry out their duties. This move aims to safeguard press freedom and ensure that journalists can operate without fear, allowing them to report on the unfolding political landscape effectively and safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the heightened tensions often associated with election periods, this directive highlights the government’s commitment to supporting a free press and promoting a peaceful electoral process.Speaking during a funeral service in Elgeyo Marakwet on Thursday, September 3, Murkomen stressed that reporters must be protected, especially during political events, so they can carry out their duties without fear in the tense election season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He praised journalists for their role in informing the public and even criticising government actions constructively, noting that intimidation or violence against the press is unacceptable. \u201cJournalists do a very good job in informing the public as well as criticising the government in a good manner. We will ensure that adequate investigations are done, and those found culpable face the law,\u201d Murkomen said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CS acknowledged that the media sometimes publishes unfavourable or inaccurate reports, including about himself, but insisted that grievances should be addressed through legal channels rather than threats. \u201cThe journalists sometimes write things about me, even the ones I have not done, but that should not give anyone the reason to intimidate them,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murkomen\u2019s directive followed the abduction of Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich, who was kidnapped by armed men along the Gilgil\u2013Nakuru Highway on Tuesday night and later found near Masinga Dam. The CS condemned the incident, commending police for swift investigations and promising that those responsible will face justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the country entering a high\u2011stakes political season, Murkomen emphasised that media freedom is a cornerstone of democracy, achievable only when journalists operate without fear of harm. Reporters have repeatedly raised concerns over rising cases of assault during rallies and demonstrations, urging the state to guarantee a safe working environment.Inspector General Douglas Kanja has since ordered immediate investigations into Kiprotich\u2019s abduction, underscoring the government\u2019s commitment to safeguarding press freedom as the election period approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
