🔴National Assembly Debates Landmark Motion to Safeguard Farmland.
Members of Kenya’s National Assembly are deliberating a motion that could reshape the country’s rural landscape.
Sponsored by Hon. Timothy Wanyonyi, who is currently the leading candidate for the Bungoma Gubernatorial race in 2027 said the proposal calls for the formulation of a comprehensive land use policy aimed at zoning land for agricultural and built development purposes.
The motion urges the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development to establish a framework that designates specific zones for residential and commercial development, complete with shared public utilities, while preserving separate zones for agricultural use.

The goal is to halt the rapid loss of farmland and stabilize Kenya’s declining agricultural productivity.Citing data from the Kenya Land Alliance, Wanyonyi highlighted that only 17% of the country’s land is suitable for rain-fed agriculture, with the rest classified as semi-arid or arid. He warned that unplanned settlements are increasingly encroaching on fertile land, fragmenting rural agricultural plots into smaller parcels for construction.

“There is an urgent need to implement effective land use measures to ensure optimal agricultural output,” Wanyonyi stated during the session. If adopted, the motion could pave the way for a national zoning policy that balances development with food security an issue growing more critical as Kenya’s population and urban sprawl continue to rise.
