Recent comments by Anglican Church Bishop George Mechumo were interpreted by some supporters of Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa as an endorsement of his bid for the Bungoma gubernatorial seat. However, the bishop has since come forward to clarify the matter.Bishop Mechumo strongly criticized bloggers affiliated with the MP for misrepresenting his sermon and spreading misinformation.
He firmly reiterated his support for Timothy Wanyonyi, whom he described as a visionary leader capable of transforming Bungoma County. The bishop emphasized that every citizen has the democratic right to support and elect a leader of their choice, free from coercion or manipulation. In his message, he also called on all gubernatorial aspirants to conduct peaceful and respectful campaigns.

As the race for Bungoma’s top seat intensifies, candidates are actively seeking endorsements from various stakeholders. Timothy Wanyonyi appears to be gaining traction, especially among church leaders receiving backing from prominent figures such as Bishop George Mechumo (Anglican Church), Pastor Lawrence Busuru (PCMA Church), as well as several members of parliament and ward representatives from the county.
