๐ดTear Gas and Turmoil as Gen Z-Led Protests Rock Mexico City.
Thousands of demonstrators flooded Mexicoโs streets on Saturday in a nationwide protest against rising crime, corruption, and impunity. The movement, spearheaded by a group calling itself โGeneration Z Mexico,โ drew support from a wide demographic, including older activists and mourners of slain Michoacan Mayor Carlos Manzo.
In Mexico City, tensions escalated when hooded protesters dismantled barriers surrounding the National Palace, prompting riot police to respond with tear gas and force. According to Public Safety Secretary Pablo Vazquez, 100 police officers were injured,40 of whom required hospitalization alongside 20 civilians. Authorities arrested 20 individuals and cited another 20 for administrative offenses.
Local outlet El Universal reported that security forces hurled stones and physically assaulted demonstrators in Zรณcalo Square, dispersing the crowd after a brief but intense confrontation. The protestโs authenticity has come under scrutiny. While โGeneration Z Mexicoโ claims to be non-partisan and youth-driven, some influencers distanced themselves from the event and President Claudia Sheinbaum accused right-wing factions of manipulating the movement through social media bots.

Despite Sheinbaumโs high approval ratings, her administration faces mounting criticism over public safety, especially following Manzoโs assassination on November 1.The mayor of Uruapan had been leading efforts against drug cartels before being gunned down at a public event.Protesters voiced frustration over systemic failures. โWe need more security,โ said Andres Massa, a 29-year-old consultant carrying the pirate skull flag,a symbol of Gen Z resistance. Claudia Cruz, a physician, marched for better healthcare funding and protection for medical workers.
The unrest in Mexico mirrors a global wave of Gen Z-led activism seen this year in countries like Nepal and Madagascar, where youth movements have challenged entrenched power structures and triggered political upheaval.
