ODM’s internal cracks burst into the open over the weekend as a pro-government faction led a fierce attack on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna during a fundraiser in Nairobi. The drama played out in Kileleshwa, Dagoretti North, at an event meant to empower women and boda boda riders. Instead, it turned into a political showdown ahead of the next election cycle.
National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed and Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi led the assault, targeting Sifuna’s “Linda Mwananchi” movement.Junet accused the group of being a proxy for former President Uhuru Kenyatta. “That ‘Linda Mwananchi’ is not about defending wananchi. It’s Uhuru using Sifuna to protect his wealth and destabilize ODM from within,” Junet claimed.Wandayi, on his part, defended the millions raised at the event, saying a large portion came from President William Ruto’s donations. He dismissed critics questioning the source of the funds.“Those complaining are bitter. We have real solutions for our people. These empowerment tours in Nairobi and Nyanza will continue,” he said.

The event raised millions of shillings for local groups, but the speeches shifted focus from development to party politics.Junet also extended the fight beyond ODM, challenging DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua to a political duel for control of Nairobi County. The public clash signals deepening divisions within ODM as factions align differently ahead of 2027, with money, influence and party control now openly on the table.
