On monday the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan meet in Iran for talks to resolve the conflict over the disputed ,unclaimed area of Nagorno – Karabakh, since Azerbaijan last year’s offensive on september 19th into Nagorno – Karabakh, leading to over a hundred thousand ethnic inhabitants flee their homes.
The two countries foreign ministers were joined at the iran summit by officials from Russia, Turkey and Iran and a joint decoration was signed denouncing western influences in the region as well as agreeing to work towards peace in Nagorno – Karabakh, Russia’s foreign minister commented in an interview that the conflict has been mostly settled and both sides agree that nagorno – karabakh belongs to Azerbaijan.
The Iran talks also represented the crucial step forward to install practical measures required to normalize relations completely which include preparations for peace treaties, border demarcation , and establishment of unpleaded economic transport links, the joint statement released after the meeting emphasised the importance of respecting the territorial integrity of countries in the region.
Russia has been playing the role as the security guarantee between Azerbaijan and Armenia , both countries that were once part of the soviet union.
