During the budget appropriation committee the Chief auditor Nancy Gathungu made a presentation on the 2024 budget policy statement saying Kenya has breached four of six inductive thresholds for debt burden indicators and that the country is not yet out of the woods of debt distress.
The auditor general saw an occurrence where agencies and government departments subsequently asked and usd 1.6 trillion shillings without approval over the last 9 years accumulating to 1.644 trillion borrowed in 9 years and also saw careless tactics employed subsequently to seek more funding more than what is originally approved.
This resulted in the signing of resources to activities that have not undergone proper perusal or approval by the parliament or public participation. According to the auditors report expenditures has increased over the years. It is up by 33% from ksh 2.9 to 3.2 T while actual revenue up by 43% to ksh 2T from 1.5T
