Everlasting rivals of Gor Mahia, the AFC Leopards, gave their pursuit of a record 21st league title a significant boost on Wednesday at the Dandora Stadium when they overcame Kenya Police, who were in second position, 1-0. The crucial goal was scored by Victor Omune in the 74th minute.
Kenya Police’s unbeatable streak in 2024 came to an abrupt end with Ingwe’s triumph; this was the team’s first loss in 16 games this year. Prior to the Leopards’ defeat, Kenya Police had won seven straight games across all competitions.
On May 26, Kenya Police will have another opportunity to exact retribution for the loss when the two clubs square off in the FKF semifinals.
Police now sit in second place with 54 points after the loss, and if K’Ogalo defeats KCB on Thursday, the difference between them and Gor Mahia might widen to 12 points. However, the win moved AFC Leopards up to fourth place with 47 points, above of both Nairobi City Stats and Bandari, who were ranked fifth and sixth, respectively, based on goal differential.
Elsewhere, at the Police Sacco Stadium, Mohamed Bajaber’s late penalty goal against Tusker FC forced a 2-2 draw for City Stars.
Mike Kibwage (13 minutes) and Eric Kapaito (26 minutes) had given Tusker a 2-0 lead in the first half. The alemen appeared to be headed for a fourth straight league win, which would have put them ahead of Kenya Police in second place. But City Stars came back stronger in the second half. Samuel Kapen cut the score in the 75th minute, and Bajaber’s goal in the 92nd minute sealed the comeback.
Tusker now sits in third place with 53 points as a result of the results, while City Stars will start Round 31 in sixth place with 47 points.
The match between Tusker and Nairobi City Stars was one of four games on Wednesday that finished in a draw.
The Kariobangi Sharks and in-form striker John Makwata were held at bay by the Murang’a Seals defense at Sebastiab Park in Murang’a as the two teams battled to a goalless draw. After the tie, the Kariobangi Sharks overtook Bidco United into ninth place on goal differential with 41 points, while Murang’a Seal dropped to 12th place with 36 points.
Another goalless draw between Muhoroni Youth and Bandari took place at Muhoroni Stadium in Kisumu, extending the winless streaks of both teams to five league games.
The outcome, when combined with the other results of the day, put Muhoroni Youth in 17th place with 28 points, making their fight to avoid relegation more difficult. Fifth with 47 points is Bandari.
Shabana wasted a fantastic chance to ensure their place in the top flight next season with their 1-1 draw with Talanta at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay. The Glamour Boys dropped to 16th place with 29 points as a consequence of Sofapaka’s 2-1 victory over Posta Rangers at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos. Batoto ba Mungu, on the other hand, moved up to 15th place with 31 points.
In Homa Bay, Mathew Tegisi’s goal saved a point for the home team after Talanta had taken the lead against Shabana in the 51st minute. but mathew tegisi rescured a point for the home team with a goal inthe 61st minute.
In Machakos, Sofapaka defeated Posta Rangers 2-1 to snap a nine-match league losing streak. Goals came from Darius Msagha (16th minute) and Rodgers Kipkemboi (39th minute). Despite losing, the mailmen had 43 points to finish ninth.
In the other matches of the day, Kakamega Homeboyz defeated Nzoia Sugar 1-0 thanks to a goal from Nicholas Kipkirui in the 36th minute. With the victory, Abana Abeingo moved up to seventh place in the 18-team league standings with 44 points, while Nzoia Sugar continued to finish last with just 18 points.
Earlier at the Dandora Stadium, Ulinzi Stars upset home team Bidco United 1-0. Yakeen Mutheli’s goal in the 91st minute gave Ulinzi Stars their first league win in five games.
Ulinzi Stars maintained their position at 13th with 35 points, while Bidco United dropped to tenth place with 41 points.
