Azimio leaders have increased their opposition to the tax plans in the financial bill 2024.
The opposition leaders, led by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, attacked the Bill’s punitive tax provisions, claiming that the poor and middle class will bear the brunt of the burden, increasing the country’s economic difficulties.
“In regards to the Finance Bill 2024, it looks like this government is determined to kill the middle class,” Kalonzo stated.
“We must pray to this government to hear the cries of Kenyans who are overburdened,” DAP-K Party chairman Eugene Wamalwa said.
The opposition leaders branded the motor circulation tax stupid, urging the National Assembly to cease public involvement in the finance measure and abolish the disputed tax plans.
“Kenyans are complaining about taxes…it must be rejected; it should not see the light of day,” National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi stated.
The opposition also attacked President William Ruto’s answer to the cost of his recent private jet trip to the United States, which he said cost merely Ksh.10 million shillings. They demanded a more convincing explanation from Ruto.
“We were told that the jet was cheaper than KQ. The president’s sum may appear insignificant, but Kenyans are being overtaxed; Kenyans require a more comprehensive response,” Wamalwa stated.
The opposition also addressed the ‘one man, one vote, one shilling’ topic, emphasizing that it is about equal resource allocation throughout the country rather than just Mt. Kenya.
The opposition’s statements come barely two weeks after Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua resurrected the ‘one man, one vote, one penny’ discussion on the revenue distribution system for the counties.
