Agriculture and Livestock Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi has stated that Northern Kenya has marked increased investments in the growth of the livestock sector.
These efforts are aimed at establishing Isiolo as a key hub for livestock and livestock products destined for the international market.
More than 10 million pastoralists in Northern Kenya rely on livestock as their primary source of income. The livestock sector has played a crucial role in promoting inclusivity and prosperity for many individuals in Kenya.
Approximately 45 billion shillings has been allocated for the drilling of boreholes in Isiolo and the expansion of Isiolo International Airport to facilitate meat exports.
To further support this industry, Kenya is making significant investments in infrastructure development in the North, creating opportunities for pastoralists to engage in the commercial livestock industry.
Mithika Linturi, the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock, emphasized the importance of drilling boreholes in Isiolo. This initiative will enable residents to effectively care for their livestock and access better market opportunities for their products.
Linturi also highlighted the need for expanding the Isiolo International Airport, as it holds great potential for exporting meat products. He encouraged residents to venture into livestock farming, assuring them of a profitable market.
In recent years, the total earnings from livestock exports have shown a positive trend. In 2023, the earnings reached 190.5 billion, while in 2022, they amounted to 153.7 billion, indicating a significant increase of approximately 24%.
The government’s investments in infrastructure development, market facilities, and capacity-building programs are creating opportunities for pastoralists to engage in the commercial livestock industry.
With these initiatives, the sector is expected to continue growing, contributing to the inclusivity and prosperity of individuals in Kenya.
