For the first time, the impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua appeared in public on Sunday after being discharged from Karen Hospital in Nairobi.
This followed a short illness that affected him during the process of his impeachment that was going on in the Senate last week.
Gachagua began by recounting the struggles he has faced in recent days, including an incident where his food was poisoned by individuals he claimed were top security officials from the President’s office.
Regarding his security, Gachagua asserted that his family’s safety is at risk, referencing statements made previously by President William Ruto during his tenure as Deputy President in former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government, a time when there were disagreements between them.
He also spoke about being denied permission to fly to attend mashujaa Day celebrations in Kwale County, despite wishing Kenyans a happy celebration on his social media.
A similar travel issue affected Ruto on August 2, 2021, when he sought to travel to Uganda for a personal visit, being informed by Wilson Airport management that he needed permission from the then head of public service, Joseph Kinyua.
Gachagua was similarly denied permission of travel to Kwale on Sunday. However, he expressed regret over how he had helped President William Ruto in the 2022 election campaign, reminding him of his commitments during the campaigns.
