In a transformative health initiative,85 patients in Bungoma County received free eye surgeries on Tuesday this week, thanks to a partnership between Senator David Wakoli and Lions SightFirst Eye Hospital from Nairobi.
Held at the Bungoma County Referral Hospital’s Eye Unit, the medical camp drew hundreds of residents from early morning. Over 240 individuals* benefited from a range of services including eye check-ups, cataract screenings, and free medication.Senator Wakoli, speaking at the event, emphasized that the program was born out of a needs assessment conducted by his office, which identified cataracts as a leading cause of preventable blindness in Kenya.
He stressed the urgency of addressing this issue, especially in underserved communities. The eye camp will continue for two more days, offering completely free services, including surgeries performed by specialized teams.Wakoli urged residents suffering from eye conditions to seize the opportunity and called on county governments to prioritize eye health, especially in rural areas where access to specialized care remains limited.“This is more than just medical aid, it’s restoring dignity and independence to those who’ve lived in darkness for too long,” Wakoli said.
