In a heartfelt tribute to Kenya’s late statesman Raila Odinga, residents of Kamatuto Estate in Njiru, Kasarani constituency, Nairobi, have named a local road in his honour.
On Sunday, October 26, community members including boda boda riders and local leaders gathered to unveil a bold orange-and-blue signpost inscribed “Raila Odinga Road,” symbolizing the legacy of the former Prime Minister and Roads Minister.

“We are here today to remember Baba,” said the Kamatuto residents’ chairperson. “By naming this road after Raila, we’re sending a message to Kenyans and our leaders that his impact lives on.”The three-kilometre stretch runs from Kangundo Road through Kamatuto Estate to Mwiki, but its poor condition has sparked calls for urgent renovation. Locals are now appealing to Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and area MP Ronald Karauri to upgrade the road, arguing that improved infrastructure would unlock economic opportunities and better connect the estate to the wider Kasarani region.

This isn’t the first time Raila’s name has been etched into Nairobi’s landscape. In 2021, Mbagathi Way was renamed Raila Odinga Way to honour his contributions to Kenya’s democratic journey. That six-kilometre dual carriageway links Langata Road to Ngong Road and stands as a testament to his enduring influence.Raila Odinga passed away on October 15, but his legacy continues to inspire civic pride and calls for development across the country.
