Former Kanduyi MP Alfred Khang’ati has launched a scathing attack on ex-Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati, accusing him of misusing county funds on the Musikoma-Kanduyi dual carriageway project. The 6.5-kilometre stretch of the C33 road linking Sang’alo Junction to Kanduyi Junction was awarded to Zhongmei Engineering Group Ltd under a contract valued at KSh 1.382 billion.
Initially slated for completion within 24 months, the project has since racked up over KSh 1 billion in payments, with pending bills exceeding KSh 544 million, including interest and delayed-payment claims.Khang’ati condemned the project as a “misappropriated ideology,” alleging that Wangamati diverted county resources to fund what was originally a national government initiative. He argued that the money would have been better spent on rural feeder roads, many of which remain impassable during the rainy season.“Instead of flashy urban projects, we should be fixing the roads that matter most to our people,” Khang’ati said.
Wangamati, who served as Bungoma Governor from 2017 to 2022 before losing to Kenneth Lusaka, has declared his intention to run again in 2027. But Khang’ati, also eyeing the seat, dismissed his rival’s comeback bid, calling him unfit to lead.“Wangamati had his chance and failed. Bungoma needs a visionary leader who puts people first,I believe I’m that leader,” he said.
Khang’ati highlighted his development record as Kanduyi MP (2007–2013), citing projects like Mechimeru Sub-County Hospital, Kibabii University, expanded rural electrification, and numerous public schools. He also pledged to prioritize youth and women empowerment and push for tech-driven service delivery. With the 2027 gubernatorial race heating up, other contenders include Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, and Zacharia Baraza setting the stage for a fierce political showdown in Bungoma.
