Makali Slams IEBC Over Voter Re-Registration Directive.
Kanduyi Member of Parliament John Makali has criticized the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for directing some Kenyans to register afresh as voters, questioning the necessity of the move.
Makali argued that the commission’s biometric system, successfully used in the last General Election, makes fresh registration redundant. His remarks followed IEBC’s clarification that only voters who registered before 2012 must re-enroll to be included in the current biometric voter register.
During a meeting with IEBC officials in Mombasa, Makali said it was agreed that the 2022 voter register would be used in the 2027 General Election. He insisted no resolution was made requiring pre-2012 voters to register again.
“As JLAC, we met IEBC in Mombasa and confirmed that no decision was made requiring pre-2012 voters to register again. I am pleased IEBC has now clarified this publicly,” Makali said. “Only those who missed registering in 2012 under the biometric system need to enroll. Everyone else is fine, no fresh registration required.”
Makali also urged young people to register in large numbers, stressing that their participation is vital in shaping Kenya’s future leadership. He cautioned youth against using abusive language on social media, encouraging respectful and constructive engagement with leaders. The mass voter registration exercise began March 30 and will run through April 31, 2026, with IEBC urging young Kenyans to take advantage of the opportunity.
