Matungu Member of Parliament Peter Nabulindo has called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, DCI, to urgently investigate what he describes as a series of targeted attacks against the family of former Matungu MP David Were.
Speaking at the former Mps’ home where the burial was done recently, Nabulindo expressed concern over what he termed a worrying pattern of violence that has left several members of the Were family dead or seriously injured over the past few years. The latest incident involved the killing of Hanington Were, a son of the former MP, who was recently laid to rest after he was attacked and killed by unknown assailants in Kisumu last month. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, with investigators yet to provide answers on the motive behind the attack.Nabulindo noted that Hanington’s death is not an isolated incident, but part of a series of attacks that have repeatedly targeted members of the family.
He recalled the 2023 attack on David Were himself, during which the former MP sustained serious injuries and underwent a lengthy recovery period.According to the Matungu Mp, while the former MP was still recuperating, tragedy struck again when his eldest son was allegedly targeted and killed at his home. Barely four months later, another son was reportedly attacked and stabbed in the heart, raising fears that the family is being systematically targeted.Nabulindo claimed that information available to authorities points to a suspect who is believed to be known, yet no arrests have been made in connection with any of the incidents. He questioned the slow pace of investigations and called on security agencies to move swiftly to ensure justice is served.
The MP further warned that the repeated attacks reflect a growing insecurity problem in the country, saying the failure to apprehend those responsible risks eroding public confidence in the nation’s security institutions. He has now urged the DCI and other relevant security agencies to launch a comprehensive investigation into the incidents, bring the perpetrators to book, and guarantee the safety of the affected family. The family, meanwhile, continues to seek answers as they mourn the loss of their loved ones amid growing concerns over their security.
