In a poignant blend of mourning and political discourse, Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli addressed a crowd gathered in Baraki village, Kabuchai Constituency, during a fundraising ceremony to support funeral expenses for the late Laban Musungu, uncle to Tandao TV Director, Robert Wanyonyi.
While the event was primarily intended to honor the life of the deceased, it quickly evolved into a platform for the senator to speak on matters gripping the county’s political landscape.Senator Wakoli used the occasion to voice his firm support for the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), commending its ongoing efforts to root out corruption across the country.
He emphasized the importance of allowing the commission to operate independently, free from political interference or personal agendas. In a pointed remark, Wakoli urged former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati to avoid implicating National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula in his current legal woes.
Wangamati has recently come under scrutiny over corruption allegations, and Wakoli insisted that dragging other leaders into the fray would only derail the investigative process. “Let the EACC do its work,” Wakoli said, “and let us not politicize justice.”However, the senator’s comments stirred mixed reactions among attendees. While some applauded his stance, others, particularly supporters of the former governor, expressed concern that Wangamati was being unfairly targeted for political reasons. Several residents argued that the criticism directed at him was less about accountability and more about political rivalry.
Despite the tension, Wakoli remained composed and optimistic. He took the opportunity to rally support for the Ford Kenya party, expressing confidence that it would clinch victory in the upcoming Chwele Ward by-election. “Ford Kenya is strong in Kabuchai,” he declared, “and we will continue to serve the people with integrity.”Throughout his address, Wakoli maintained a delicate balance between paying tribute to the late Musungu and navigating the complex political currents of Bungoma County.
He concluded with a call for unity among leaders, urging them to rise above partisan divides and focus on serving the public with transparency and honor.
