In an effort to end poverty and the long lasting insecurity in the Kio valley belt, residents for over 14000 farmers in Turkana county are gradually altering their way of life by giving up raising livestock and converting this dry land into a factor of production.
11000 farmers are receiving assistance from the National Irrigation Authority hence benefiting from the Locu irrigation scheme, which is situated on 2560 acres of land some of the crops here include green gram, maize, sorghum and watermelon.
Another irrigation system is Katilu irrigation scheme which serves 3000 farmers using water from river Turkwel. The scheme which is situated in the Southern portion of Turkana and suits on 1000 acres of land is another source of assistance for the residents who were previously only able to afford three meals per day, send their children to school and support their families.
Beneficiaries are urging the locals in this vicinity to likewise give up raising cattle in order to reduce poverty and provide for their families which is brought by cattle wrestling activities along Kio valley belt.
