In a recent turn of events at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), chaos erupted among Nairobi Members of County Assembly (MCAs) as accusations of intimidation flew across the room. What began as a heated verbal exchange quickly escalated into physical altercations, prompting security personnel to step in and restore order.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna did not hold back as he called out Imwatok, a fellow ODM member, in the midst of the chaos.The root of the tension lies in the ongoing dispute between the MCAs and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) over salary increments. The MCAs are pushing for a threefold increase in their salaries and the establishment of a ward development fund to better serve their constituents. Mustafa Abdirashid, Garissa County Assembly Deputy Speaker, highlighted the challenges faced by county assemblies in meeting the needs of the public, emphasizing the importance of a ward development fund for effective service delivery.

Governor Irungu Kang’ata of Murang’a echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the critical role of MCAs in the daily lives of citizens. Despite the tumultuous events at KICC, the County Assemblies Forum remains steadfast in its commitment to defending devolution and advocating for fair budget allocations.In light of recent events, the MCAs are calling on the Senate and the Head of State to intervene and address their grievances. Beyond financial demands, the MCAs are advocating for the legal establishment of ward development funds to further enhance service delivery and meet the needs of the public.However, public opinion has been largely critical of the MCAs’ demands, with many questioning the feasibility of their requests.
