“A Farewell to a Humble Shepherd: Funeral Plans Underway as Pope Francisโ Burial Takes Shape”
The Catholic world is in mourning as funeral arrangements for Pope Francis officially begin following the confirmation of his passing by Vatican authorities.
The solemn announcement was made by Camerlengo Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who, in accordance with centuries-old tradition, declared the seat of the Holy See vacant. In a poignant ceremonial gesture, the โFishermanโs Ringโ โ the Popeโs official signet โ was destroyed, symbolizing the conclusion of his papal authority.
His personal residence at the Vatican has also been sealed, marking the beginning of a period of mourning and transition for the Roman Catholic Church.Pope Francis’ body, currently resting in a simple wooden coffin outside the chapel of his residence at Casa Santa Marta, will lie in state for three days at St. Peterโs Basilica. From today, thousands of mourners โ including dignitaries, heads of state, and faithful followers โ will have the opportunity to pay their final respects ahead of the funeral scheduled for Saturday.

Unlike his predecessors, Pope Francis made specific requests in his will, penned two years ago. In this testament, he asked not to be buried beneath the grand St. Peterโs Basilica, but rather at the ancient Marian shrine known as the People’s Basilica, near the revered Pauline Chapel.
His love and devotion to the Virgin Mary were a central theme throughout his life, and this final resting place reflects that profound spiritual connection. In life, Pope Francis was known for his humility and for breaking away from long-standing Vatican traditions. That legacy continues in death. He will be laid to rest in a modest cypress wood coffin, encased in a second wooden layer.
True to his preference for simplicity, his tombstone will bear only the name “Franciscus” โ a humble end for a Pope whose legacy reached across boundaries of faith, politics, and continents. As the Vatican prepares for the conclave that will elect his successor, cardinals from around the world will gather to honor a leader who reshaped the papacy with compassion, reform, and an unwavering commitment to the marginalized. His passing marks the close of a remarkable chapter in the Church’s history, and the beginning of a new one.
