A journey of inspiration and national pride is unfolding as Miriam Paraan Lumoni, a Grade 5 pupil at Bungoma D.E.B Primary School, prepares to represent Africa at the prestigious World Youth Chess Championships in Kazakhstan, scheduled for September 18th.
Her rise from humble beginnings to international acclaim has captured the hearts of many across the country.Miriam, who was recently crowned the Africa U13 Chess Champion, has become a beacon of hope for young talents in Kenya, especially girls pursuing sports and academics. Her teachers and peers describe her as a focused, intelligent and determined young mind who spends hours refining her strategies on the chessboard.
The principal of Bungoma D.E.B Primary School, Tobias Khisa, praised Miriam’s work ethic and humility, noting that her success is the product of discipline and continuous mentorship. “She’s an exceptional learner who combines academic excellence with a rare strategic mindset. We are proud of her,” he remarked.Miriam’s mother, Rosemary, expressed both joy and concern, describing the journey as a dream come true but also calling on well-wishers and stakeholders to support her daughter’s travel and preparation expenses.
“We are very proud, but this is a big step, and we need help to get her there,” she said, holding back emotion.Local leaders have also joined the call for support. Antony Luseneka, MCA for Bukembe West, lauded Miriam’s achievement as a win for the entire Bungoma community. “This is not just a personal success; it’s a statement that Bungoma has world-class talent. We must rally behind her,” he emphasized, urging both the county and national governments to step in.
From the national chess community, Sammy Wekesa, an official with the Chess Kenya Federation, noted that Miriam’s qualification puts Kenya on the global map for youth chess excellence. He emphasized the need to invest more in grassroots chess programs to nurture similar talents across the country.
Despite her young age, Miriam remains composed and focused. Speaking confidently, she shared her excitement about meeting players from across the world and representing not just Kenya but Africa. “I want to make my school, my county, and my continent proud,” she said, her eyes gleaming with anticipation.
