President William Ruto has announced the government’s plan to rehabilitate the 27-kilometre highway linking Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to ABC Place via Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway, and Waiyaki Way, in a bid to ease traffic congestion and improve Nairobi’s infrastructure.
Speaking during the Mashujaa Day celebrations on Friday, December 12, President Ruto emphasized the urgency of the project, citing the deteriorating condition of the road and its impact on motorists and the capital’s image.“We are commencing the renovation of the highway from JKIA through to ABC,” said the President. “We want to beautify it so that Nairobi can look better, especially as people travel for Christmas.”

The President confirmed that construction work on the corridor would begin this month, with directives already issued to contractors to resume roadworks across the city, including the Mombasa Road–Uhuru Highway–Waiyaki Way stretch. The highway, a major artery connecting the country’s busiest airport to the city center and western suburbs, has long been plagued by traffic bottlenecks and surface degradation. The planned upgrade is expected to enhance mobility, reduce travel time, and support Nairobi’s broader urban renewal agenda.
