National Assembly Minority Leader and Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohamed is facing mounting pressure from within the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition, as seven affiliate parties have called for his immediate resignation from all leadership roles in the alliance.
In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, January 13, the parties accused Mohamed of making remarks that they say undermine the legacy of former President Uhuru Kenyatta and threaten the unity of the opposition coalition. The leaders described his comments as reckless and defamatory, warning that they risk deepening internal divisions at a time when cohesion is crucial in Parliament.“We express our profound concern over the continued reckless and defamatory utterances by some Azimio La Umoja One Kenya officials, especially Hon Junet Mohamed,” the statement read.
The parties emphasized the need to uphold Kenyatta’s legacy, portraying him as a statesman who championed national unity and ensured a peaceful transition of power. They argued that Mohamed’s recent conduct has placed the coalition in an awkward position and weakened its credibility. At the heart of the dispute is Mohamed’s perceived closeness to the Kenya Kwanza administration. Critics within Azimio allege that he has failed to assertively represent opposition interests in the National Assembly, raising questions about his commitment to the coalition’s agenda.

This latest fallout adds to a series of internal disputes that have dogged Mohamed’s political career. He previously came under fire for his role in the 2022 General Election, with some accusing him of sidelining key strategists. His relationship with senior figures in the Orange Democratic Movement, including Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, has also been strained by disagreements over party discipline and alleged external interference.
The affiliate parties concluded their statement with a firm demand for Mohamed’s resignation from all Azimio leadership positions, signaling a deepening rift within the opposition alliance. As of the time of publication, Junet Mohamed had not publicly responded to the calls for his resignation.
