The National Police Service has launched a manhunt following a suspected Al Shabaab attack in Hulugho, Garissa County, that left a local chief and a primary school teacher dead.
In a statement issued on Monday, January 26, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja directed the deployment of a multi-agency security team to pursue the attackers and ensure they are brought to justice. NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said security patrols in Hulugho and surrounding areas had been intensified. “A multi-agency security team is actively pursuing the perpetrators of this cowardly act. The area has been secured, and an operation is ongoing to apprehend those responsible and ensure they face the full force of the law,” the statement read.
The service reassured residents of their safety, acknowledging the anxiety caused by the incident. Authorities urged anyone with information to report to the nearest police station or contact security agencies through toll-free numbers 999, 911, or 112. Information can also be shared with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations via 0800722203 or WhatsApp at 0709570000. “The National Police Service, under the leadership of the Inspector General, remains unwavering in its commitment to protect and serve the public. We will not be deterred by criminal acts and are resolute in safeguarding the lives and property of all Kenyans, residents, and visitors,” the statement added.

The attack occurred on the night of Sunday, January 25, when militants stormed the homes of Chief Abdi Gani Owl and the teacher, killing both. Garissa Member of Parliament Edo Udgoon Siyad described the killings as a deep tragedy for the community. “I send my condolences to the families of Chief Abdi Gani Owl and the dedicated teacher, both of whom served the Hulugho community with unwavering commitment,” she said.
Siyad condemned the violence and called for unity in support of the affected families. “We condemn this senseless violence and stand united in support of all affected. May Chief Gani rest in Jannatul Firdaus, and may the teacher’s family find strength and peace,” she added.
