In a pivotal announcement, President William Ruto has proposed exempting Kenyans earning up to KSh 30,000 a month from income tax to alleviate the financial strain on low-income households. Speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast in Nairobi, he affirmed, “Those earning up to KSh 30,000 should not pay income tax.”
Acknowledging a potential KSh 40 billion revenue shortfall, Ruto emphasized that supporting struggling citizens is a priority. He also addressed recent public transport strikes, stating that the government has invested KSh 28 billion in stabilizing fuel prices, which would otherwise have climbed to KSh 273 per litre; instead, it remains around KSh 232 due to subsidies.
Ruto further announced plans for a local oil refinery, set to begin construction next year, which aims to reduce reliance on imported fuel and strengthen Kenya’s energy security. These proposals highlight the government’s commitment to easing the economic burden faced by many Kenyans amid rising living costs.
