For years in western Kenya by the conventional methods employed are not so modern with access to this old holes
The heaps of soils dug from the holes are said to contain pressure stones and the process of separation is tedious. The soils are mixed with water and sieved before the contents are again mixed with mercury for further separation.

The mines have also been depth traps due to their poor states especially during the rainy season and due to lack of modern equipment and safety care.
