In a historic leadership shift, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has officially confirmed Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga as its new party leader, following the death of longtime leader Raila Odinga earlier this month.
The announcement came after a Central Committee meeting held on October 27, 2025, at Chungwa House in Nairobi. ODM’s top brass urged members nationwide to rally behind Dr. Oburu, emphasizing unity and resilience during this pivotal transition.“We endorse Hon. Dr. Oburu Oginga as the new Party Leader and urge all members to accord him the necessary cooperation to guide the movement through this transition,” read the committee’s statement.
The party also expressed deep gratitude to President William Ruto, government officials, and the Kenyan public for their support during Raila Odinga’s funeral, which they described as a dignified farewell for a global statesman who championed democracy and justice.Dr. Oburu, a seasoned economist and politician, becomes only the second leader in ODM’s 20-year history. His résumé includes stints as Assistant Minister for Finance, Member of Parliament, and Member of the East African Legislative Assembly.
He had been serving as acting party leader since October 16, following his appointment by the National Executive Committee.ODM reaffirmed its commitment to Raila’s legacy, pledging to uphold values of peace, inclusion, and national unity.
The party also announced a series of memorial services to honor Raila’s life and contributions, beginning in Kilifi County on November 2–3, followed by events in Homa Bay and Migori on November 5–6.To mark its 20th anniversary, ODM will host celebrations themed (ODM@20) in Mombasa from November 14–16, featuring activities aimed at strengthening internal cohesion and recommitting to democratic ideals.
The party concluded by urging the national government to release overdue funds from the Political Parties Fund, citing billions in unpaid allocations that are hampering operations.
