World Water Day celebrations in Kakamega County brought together youth groups, local leaders, and stakeholders who rallied for the protection of water catchment areas and improved access to clean water.
The event, held at Amalemba Grounds under the theme “Gender and Water,” combined a sports tournament with community dialogue. Youth leader Eliud Wanjala urged residents to take responsibility in safeguarding water sources, while organizer Konyabo Corazone emphasized the importance of keeping the environment clean.
Discussions highlighted the link between gender and water access, with participants calling for stronger county government efforts in service delivery. Jomo David noted that the issues raised could guide future community decisions on water and sanitation.
Takwa FC emerged victorious in the football match, which drew large crowds and served as a platform for engaging the community. Geoffrey Gidai encouraged youths to remain focused and register as voters ahead of the 2027 elections, while Climate Change Officer Jessica Ateka praised their unity.
Nancy Mushila reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing youth challenges, as stakeholders stressed collective responsibility in protecting water resources. The celebrations underscored the role of young people in driving sustainable water and sanitation practices across the county.
