Singer Kevin Kioko, popularly known as Bahati, has called for more unity among Kenyan artists amid domination by foreign singers.
Sharing screenshots from some of the streaming platforms, Bahati lamented that foreign artists are being played in Kenya massively at the expense of the local artists because they have united to take their music to the next level.
“Wasanii wenzangu wa Kenya tumeacha jirani analala hadi na bibi zetu… From YouTube, Boomplay, iTunes to our radios & TVs… Number 1 to 10 Trending ni Tanzania I almost thought I was in Dar-es-alaam,” Bahati lamented.
He added: “It’s not that I have anything against TZ or Nigeria in fact Chibu and King Kiba are my undeniable brothers but we need to pick a lesson from this… This is the time for Kenyan musicians to stop thinking you can make it alone and simply come together…”
Bahati further said that no solo Kenyan artist can take the Kenyan sound to the global stage without collaborating with others.
“Or else we will keep curtain raising for our neighbours… Look at what they’re doing, they’re coming together and through their unity they’re taking over home and away! Don’t get me wrong sio collabo naitisha nikitaka collabo nitaimba na Diana B.”
His sentiments resonated well with comedian Eric Omondi, who has on several occasions called out Kenyan musicians for ‘being lazy’ and not doing enough to match or beat their regional counterparts.
” Amkeni wameanza kuamka… Bro sijalala, but I’m happy umeanza kuona. I hope wasanii wamekuskia. Let’s take back our rightful position as leaders of the region,” Omondi responded to Bahati’s post.
Diana B, Bahati’s wife whom he mentioned, also urged artists to unite and take the industry to another level.
“On a serious note, Kenyan artists shikaneni mjenge industry. Huku kwa content creation Team Dee ndio top in Africa. Otherwise kitaturamba very soon.”
