Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has called for discipline and unity within the party ranks, urging members to refrain from prematurely discussing ODM’s strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during the party’s 20th anniversary celebrations, Odinga emphasized that internal decisions must remain confidential until the party officially announces its next move.“Don’t commit the party to things that haven’t been discussed. Who told you ODM doesn’t have a candidate in 2027?” Odinga posed, hinting at a possible presidential contender while urging restraint.
His remarks come amid growing tensions within ODM, with some members threatening to leave if the party backs President William Ruto in the next election. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, among the dissenting voices, recently criticized attempts to silence divergent views within the party.
“Raila himself has said this is a democratic party,” Sifuna stated last month. “Yet some thugs claim I can’t hold independent views just because I’m secretary-general.”Odinga has remained noncommittal on whether he will personally vie for the presidency in 2027, maintaining that ODM’s roadmap is clear and decisions will be made in due time.
