The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a five-day weather advisory warning of widespread moderate to heavy rainfall, chilly nights in the highlands, and soaring daytime temperatures in parts of the northeast and coast, beginning Friday, December 12.
In its latest bulletin, the department said the anticipated rainfall will affect several regions, including Central Kenya, the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Northeastern, Coastal, and South-Eastern Lowlands. The rains are expected to intensify gradually over the forecast period, signaling a likely end to the prolonged dry spell that has gripped much of the country for nearly two months.
Regions to Expect Rainfall
The rains are forecast to begin Friday evening and persist through the weekend into early next week. Affected counties include:-Central Kenya counties named Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.
Lake Victoria Basin and Western Kenya:Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, and Baringo.

Rift Valley Counties:Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
Northeastern Counties:Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo are expected to receive moderate rainfall.
Temperature Extremes Expected
Alongside the rains, the weather agency has cautioned of significant temperature fluctuations:-
Cold Nights
Residents in Central Kenya and parts of the Rift Valley should brace for chilly nights, with temperatures expected to dip to as low as 5°C.
Scorching Days
In contrast, daytime temperatures in Northeastern and Coastal counties including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale are projected to soar to highs of 37°C.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has urged the public to remain vigilant, especially in flood-prone areas, and to take necessary precautions against the expected weather changes. Authorities are also advising farmers and travelers to plan accordingly as the weather patterns shift.
