Residents of Bungoma town have turned Flora Onyango’s 74-hour tree-hugging exercise into a platform for protest, using it to express growing frustration with the County government over alleged corruption and rising youth unemployment.
What began as an environmental conservation initiative quickly transformed into a symbol of deeper social and economic challenges facing young people in the region.Residents claim that throughout the entire 74-hour period, County leaders failed to visit the site or provide any form of support to Flora Onyango, a move they describe as a sign of indifference toward youth-led initiatives and environmental advocacy.

Angered by the alleged neglect, residents organized demonstrations from the town center all the way to the County government offices. The protesters marched while chanting slogans and carrying placards demanding accountability, transparency, and job creation for the youth. The demonstrators argue that the silence from County leadership reflects a broader trend of ignoring public concerns and sidelining youth-driven efforts.
Residents are now calling on the County government to address allegations of corruption, prioritize employment opportunities for young people, and actively support community initiatives. As calm gradually returns to Bungoma town, residents maintain that their message is clear: symbolic actions like Flora Onyango’s tree-hugging exercise should not be dismissed, but recognized as a call for meaningful change.
